Mini SPI, unstable idling #1. Accelerator cable and diagnosis

We have rebuilt completely the 1275 cc engine, it has a brand new wiring harness, new coolant, fuel and vacuum hoses. We made it with love. But this damn Mini is still not happy. He is moaning in the form of unstable idle. Another problem, another challenge in our way to the full restoration of this Mini 1275 cc SPI.

This idle problem gonna be looooong and difficult to solve. We are going to do dozens (literally) of checkings and, to keep your mental health, we will split the process in several episodes. As usual, in all of them we will share our knowledge, experiences and conclusions about the related topic, in detail.

In this episode we are going to treat two fundamental topics. What would you need to do if you have idle problems in a Mini SPI? Adjust the accelerator cable. With this you can adjust the idle through the step motor from the throttle body. What do we need? A couple of spanners (size 13), a diagnosis cable and, of course, the diagnosis app for MEMS ECUs (1.2, 1.3, 1.6 y 1.9). In this case we will use the app “MEMS Diag”, but there are some others.

With this app we will focus this chapter on the “Idle target RPM” value. We will modify this field to check how the ECU changes the idle speed.

Will these basic checks fix the idle problem? Let’s see!

Comment anything you want! 😉
